Louis van Gaal was none too happy when asked to respond to the on-screen comments of former Manchester United defender turned TV pundit, Rio Ferdinand, following his side’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
In the post-match autopsy on BT Sport, the now retired centre-back, and his ex-team mate Paul Scholes, laid into the lack of quality, spirit and progress display by the Dutchman’s team. They questioned his philosophy and its relevancy at a club that already possessed its own set of principles to play to on the pitch, set down by Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.
“It was shambolic,” said Scholes, as reported by the Guardian. “Tonight was a disaster. Liverpool had a way of playing. United? I didn’t have a clue what they were trying to do. United didn’t need a new philosophy, they had one for 20-odd years that worked.”
